What does “without payment” actually mean?
Searching for a free dating app is more complicated than it sounds. An app can cost nothing to download while still offering subscriptions or in-app purchases once you start using it. Apple explicitly distinguishes the two: an App Store app with a “Get” button is free to download, but it can still contain paid subscriptions and in-app purchases. Google Play similarly labels apps that “offer in-app purchases.”
Dating apps also draw the free/paid line in different places. Messaging may be free while seeing everyone who has liked you requires a subscription. Another app may allow a limited number of Likes for free and sell unlimited Likes as a premium feature.
So instead of asking only “is this dating app free?”, it is more useful to ask what can I actually do without paying?
Which dating app features are free?

Free doesn't necessarily mean unusable
It is important not to overstate the difference. Several large dating apps provide genuinely useful functionality without payment.
Tinder says it offers free chat, provided both people have indicated mutual interest. Hinge's own feature table lists Match and Message in the free tier. OkCupid goes further still, describing itself as “completely free to use” and stating that “messaging on OkCupid is always free” — you can even send an intro after Liking someone, before they have liked you back. Bumble conversations are free once matched, subject to its own rules: in heterosexual matches the woman sends the first message, and matches run on a 24-hour timer.
This is exactly why the word “free” is doing so much work. An app can accurately call itself completely free to use and still reserve seeing who liked you, and unlimited Likes, for subscribers. Both statements are true at once.
The distinction is therefore not always “free versus paid.” More often it is which parts of the dating experience are considered basic and which are considered premium.
What usually sits behind dating-app subscriptions?
Seeing incoming Likes is the clearest example, and all four apps document it themselves. Tinder lists “See who Likes You” under Gold and Platinum. Bumble says signing up for Premium means you can “see who's liked you first with Liked You.” Hinge states that “free users of Hinge can only see one incoming like at a time,” while subscribers view them all at once. OkCupid says that seeing who Likes you “without having to like them first” is reserved for users with subscriptions.
There is a second pattern worth noticing: the daily Like limit. Tinder Plus advertises “send unlimited daily Likes,” Hinge notes that free users “can send only a select number of likes per day,” OkCupid says users without a subscription “have limited Likes to send per day,” and Bumble Premium includes unlimited swipes. In each case the free tier works — it is the volume that is metered.
Other premium features can include advanced filters, travel or location features, boosts, priority placement or the ability to recover expired connections. The exact bundle varies considerably between services and can change over time; Tinder's own documentation notes that some features vary due to testing in certain markets.
Is Agilis completely free?
Agilis uses a different model. There is no Premium version, subscription or feature upgrade. Seeing who likes you, messaging, the available search filters and in-app voice/video calls are part of the same product available to every user.
Agilis currently funds the service through advertising and commercial partnerships rather than subscriptions charged to daters. That doesn't automatically make Agilis the right dating app for everyone. Location, community size, the type of relationship you're looking for and the people available nearby matter too. But if your priority is being able to use the dating features without paying for a premium membership, the distinction is straightforward.
How to tell whether a dating app is really free for what you need
Before downloading a dating app, look past the download price. Check whether you can message your matches, whether you can see incoming Likes, whether the filters you care about require Premium, whether there is a daily Like limit, and whether features such as calls or privacy controls cost extra.
The right question isn't necessarily whether an app contains any paid feature. It is whether the features you consider fundamental to dating are available to you without payment.
